Acne Treatments

Acne affects 80% of population at some time during their life, from adolescence to adulthood. It usually appears on the face, chest, back and limbs and can produce life-long scars, physically and emotionally.

There are several defects that contribute to the development of acne and are targets for specific treatments;
1) increase in sebum production, 2) hypercornifcation of the pilosebaceaus duct, with decreasing exfoliation, 3) increase prolifecation of P. bacterium acne and 4) inflammation with development of pustules, cysts and nodule formation.

Some patients have only limited non-inflammatory lesions during puberty while others have deep inflamed lesions with multiple locations on the face and the body that may last well into adulthood.

Acne has very different responses to treatment. Some patients respond in the first or second month, while most may take more into 4 months to improve. Over the past several years more and more patients have a high failure rate if only one type of treatment is used once to development of resistance. Others develop side effects such as irritation to gels or creams, gastointestinal problems or systemic reactions to oral medications or resistance to antibiotics.

At the Laronn Clinique for Laser and Skin Therapy, after a thorough evaluation, depending on the type of acne, we tailor an acne treatment program to each individual patient. We have available a variety of lasers, intense pulse light, targeted enhanced UV phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, microdermabrasion and several acne peels.

Some patients will benefit form an active home treatment program; others will need a combination of microdermabrasion with acne peels, for non-inflammatory type acne. The patient with inflammatory acne with pustules and deep cysts will require phototherapy with Blu-U photodynamic therapy, laser or intense pulsed light in red spectrum for thermal shrinking of the sebaceous glands. For acne scars we offer micro laser peel or fractional laser, dermal fillers, subcision and grafting.
